The European Commission is expected to issue formal guidance on transition dates and interpretation of EN 301 893 following reports of 5 GHz WLAN equipment causing interference to meteorological radars employing non-constant pulse interval times (staggered or inter-leaved PRFs) in the 5600-5650 MHz band. The important immediate considerations for mass market products are ability to deal with staggered PRF or complete avoidance of the 5600 – 5650 MHz part of the band. Some technical background information is available from the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee 802.18 - the Radio Regulatory TAG

General Background

The R&TTE Directive sets out a regulatory framework for radio and telecommunications terminal equipment in the European Union. Such apparatus must comply with certain essential requirements.

There is a choice of conformity assessment procedures but, in general, the manufacturer or his authorised representative must maintain technical documentation that includes a declaration of conformity and that shows how compliance is achieved.

For radio equipment, it may be necessary to involve a notified body in the conformity assessment procedure. CE marking must be applied to indicate compliance.

The text of the directive can be downloaded from the European Commission website:

RTTEnet takes its name from the RTTE (or R&TTE, Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment) Directive, 1999/5/EC of the European Union. This legislation sets the essential requirements for radio & telecom terminal equipment and places the burden of responsibility for compliance on those involved in its design, manufacture and supply to the EU market.
